Much like the heterogeneous environments in the data center, customers are increasingly choosing multiple clouds as they recognize that different vendors have different areas of strength. In the first few years, many of our cloud customers were existing on-premises Oracle software and application customers, but that’s changing. Many of our new cloud customers are net new customers who didn’t have any previous relationship with Oracle or existing customers who realized that they need a multicloud strategy. These customers choose Oracle Cloud for its Autonomous Database and Exadata Cloud service offerings, high-performing compute infrastructure, lower costs, or many other reasons.

Customers have many cases where they need to move data and workflows across clouds. Common cases include critical applications, data management, and data processing in end-to-end workflows, like supply chains. They need reliable network connectivity between their public cloud providers.

Oracle’s partnership with Microsoft made headlines, but it’s only one of multiple ways to integrate Oracle and other clouds. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) and Microsoft Azure have direct connectivity between six OCI and Azure cloud regions. Azure customers can deploy full-stack applications that communicate at low latency with applications on OCI or split their applications to Compute on Azure and data infrastructure with Oracle Autonomous Database, Oracle Database with Real Application Clusters (RAC), or Exadata on OCI.

We also offer Oracle FastConnect to enable customers to connect directly to their OCI virtual cloud network through dedicated, private, high-bandwidth connections. These connections to OCI can originate from customer on-premises locations or other public clouds. FastConnect partners, like Equinix and Megaport, help customers establish this connectivity from other public clouds and on-premises locations to OCI.

Connecting OCI and AWS with Equinix

Equinix is a global digital infrastructure provider with over 220 locations and provides private interconnection to all the major cloud providers. Equinix has coverage for intercloud connectivity in more OCI regions than other providers. Customers can use Equinix Fabric Virtual Connection and Network Edge Virtual Router as shown in the following architecture to connect their application server running on AWS to an Autonomous Database running on OCI.

You can read more about the OCI-AWS reference architecture with Equinix on the Oracle Architecture Center.

The use of Oracle Autonomous in this use case keeps the architecture simple. Multicloud customers can also benefit from consolidating all their databases into one converged database using the multitenant option of Oracle Database Enterprise Edition, running on one of Oracle’s cloud database service offerings. Much like the OCI-Azure Interconnect, customers can also address a range of other use cases across the OCI and AWS service portfolio.

Connecting OCI to your on-premises data center using Equinix is straightforward. For step-by-step instructions, see Configure a FastConnect Direct Link with Equinix Cloud Exchange Fabric.

US Silica is a great customer example. They used OCI and Equinix for migrating and running an enterprise resource planning system in the Oracle Cloud. US Silica used Equinix and FastConnect to migrate their on-premises Oracle JD Edwards application to OCI. They also implemented a disaster recovery environment in the OCI Phoenix region.

Partnering with Megaport for OCI and AWS connectivity

You can achieve the same kind of public cloud connectivity using Megaport. Megaport is a global network as a service provider that provides private interconnection to major cloud providers. Customers can use Megaport Cloud Router, Virtual Cross Connect, and global Software-defined network as shown in the following architecture to connect their application server running on AWS to an Autonomous Database running on OCI.

You can read more about the OCI-AWS reference architecture with Megaport in the Oracle Architecture Center. Connecting Oracle Cloud Infrastructure to your AWS environment using Megaport is easy. For step-by-step directions, see Connecting Oracle Cloud Infrastructure to Amazon VPC with Megaport Cloud Router.

A leading fuel company in New Zealand transformed its digital customer experience by partnering with Megaport for connecting its applications running in Azure with databases running in OCI. The fast, secure, and low-latency private network connections between their Azure and Oracle Cloud environments provide the bandwidth needed for real-time apps and customer service applications.

To conclude, OCI makes it easier to use multiple clouds, including Azure and AWS. Customers can bring their entire application stack to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure or deploy a portion of their application.
